In 2005, a video game entitled Grand Theft Auto made headlines when it was discovered that users could download codes from the Internet to unlock secret sex scenes. The same video game also allows the players to visit strip clubs, engage in prostitution, steal cars, and murder police officers. As if that weren’t heinous enough, the game enables users to keep track of how much money they have spent on prostitutes and gives them the option of murdering or beating the prostitute in order to reclaim the money given to her. When young people were surveyed about their media consumption, 72 percent of the 15- to 18-year-olds had played Grand Theft Auto, as had 25 percent of 8- to 10-year-olds!145 Considering there are thousands of video games available, it is essential that parents look closely at the rating on each video game and research it prior to making a purchase for their teen. Many of the games rated for teens depict women in degrading ways, so do not be fooled by a label.
