The Priestâs Redemption
Jay Starre
Father Shannon ducked as he parted the cow-hide covering that served as a doorway to the hut and steeled himself to enter. The rest of the village gathered nearby around a blazing bonfire. The one member of the tribe who was not at that gathering was beyond this doorway, bound by strong ropes to a wooden frame built for just such dire circumstances.
The American priest straightened up to face the youth within. He was seated on the dirt floor with his arms wide apart and secured to the frame behind him. Beneath his naked buttocks and thighs, a second wooden frame lay across the floor, and he was roped to it as well. Both ankles were tied wide open in the same manner as his wrists.
One of Father Shannonâs favorites, Huto was very handsome. The young African had been one of the first to give his loyalty to the Christian God whom Father Shannon and his Catholic counterparts sought to thrust upon the East Africans in the Year of Our Lord 1913.
Now, though, his fine black features were no longer set in a repose of religious acceptance and deliverance, but twisted into a mask of violent madness. He was gagged and blindfolded. The gag prevented him spewing forth the stream of evil blasphemy that had horrified the other villagers and caused him to end up here.
He was possessed.
Father Shannonâs heart sank. The lovely dark limbs were bathed in an unholy sweat. He dared to look at the exposed crotchâthe man was entirely nakedâand his heart skipped a beat as he saw the enormous prick rearing up stiff and potent there.
He looked away. He must gather his wits!
Truthfully, he was a fraud. The villagers assumed he could banish the demon possessing Huto. He was a priest, after all, and it was at his demand they banished their witch doctor only a week earlier. He was now in charge of their spiritual well-being.
He had never performed an exorcism. In the Catholic Church, this duty was usually performed by priests trained in the art. He understood the rudiments of what must be done, but this gave him no comfort.
He had done his utmost to convince the heathen Africans that his way was the best way. Now he must show them his power, or lose all he had fought so hard to win. And there was Huto to consider. The sweet young man was in dire straits, and the priestâs heart went out to him.
Heâd brought his rosary and fingered the beads nervously as the crucifix dangled from the end. Heâd also brought his Bible and a small pottery urn filled with holy water. These would serve as his tools. Against the devil himself!
He faced Huto with his feet planted firmly and his spine erect as he began to read from the Bible. This was familiar territory, at least. Tall and commanding, with his Irish good looks, a thick head of wavy auburn hair, and bright green eyes, he was a formidable figure when he chose to be.
