All Good Things
As soon as they arrived home, Pops asked the young girl to take the dog in the backyard.
I love the backyard, but I also want to get to know Miranda.
After not stating her opinion, or asking any questions, Deicide did as she was told. It seemed like Tickles was full of unlimited energy. As much as she loved to run, the dog loved to do it more.
One particular tree seemed to always draw the dog in. Even though it had only been a few days, it was a spot he always liked to go potty. The more time she spent with Tickles, the better she got to know him.
Sometimes he would stop running and try to jump up on her for attention. Pops had told her prior that when he jumped on her, she was supposed to swat him on his nose to prevent him from jumping on people.
Each time she swatted him, the dog yelped and stopped jumping.
After a few swats, Tickles ran to the backdoor, a sign that she knew he was ready to go back inside the house.
As soon as she opened the door, Tickles ran inside straight to Miranda. The woman was sitting at the kitchen table, drinking a beer, same as Pops.
Both of the adults were smiling and looked happy. It was rare for Pops to look like this, especially for so long.
âDeicide, get that dog out of here! Adults are speaking!â
Where there was just a smile on Popsâ face was now a scowl.
I knew his bad mood would show soon.
âOh, this pup is so sweet. Itâs okay.â Miranda continued to rub the dogâs head, and Tickles seemed to be enjoying every moment of it.
The smile returned as Pops spoke again. âOh, is this your house? Do you make the rules?â
Oh no. Sheâll become another screaming woman.
Mirandaâs face turned red. âWell, no. I suppose I donât. I was only sayingâ¦â
âRight. You were only saying that you could make the rules in my house.â
Mirandaâs eyes fluttered between Deicide and Pops. The young girlâs face was solemn, but Pops still smiled through his rude words.
Please donât turn her into a screaming woman. She seems so nice and Tickles really likes her.
After glancing at her wrist, Miranda shifted her eyes back towards Pops. âI suppose itâs time for me to leave. Would you be so kind to drive me to the park, or home?â
âAfter that display of rudeness? I doubt it. Why donât you call someone to pick you up? A friend? A cab?â Popsâ smile spread wide enough to show more than his front teeth.
The woman started sifting through her purse, her face showing obvious signs of distress, due to not finding her cellular phone.
Pops held up the phone, a large crack across the screen. âLooking for this? I lifted it off you. At the park. I turned it off, broke it. We couldnât have anyone knowing where you were going.â
Small beads of sweat appeared on Mirandaâs forehead. Whether she was confused or scared, she still held her head high.
