The starkness of station architecture on the revived Borders Railway has attracted some criticism. It is all too apparent in this 24 September 2015 view of Stow station, as 158707 departs from platform 2 with a southbound service for Galashiels and Tweedbank. The old station building here has been restored, though not for rail use.
Escapees from Beeching
If Beeching had had his way, there would have been no more rail services north of Inverness and later generations would not have been able to appreciate the wild and rugged terrain of either the Far North Line – by far the longest route anywhere in Britain to have escaped the axe – nor Britain’s most scenic rail journey, the line stretching westwards from Dingwall to Kyle of Lochalsh.
I well remember my first trip to Thurso, when in March 1981, as part of a British Rail promotion running that month, I had secured a free ticket to any station in the UK by renewing my Young Person Railcard. Working in southeast London at the time, and being young and adventurous I had naturally picked Thurso, so after travelling up to Glasgow from Euston I had then taken the overnight sleeper train from Glasgow Queen Street to Inverness – though not able to afford a sleeper berth myself!
At Inverness I then caught the 06.00 train to Thurso and Wick, which was hauled by a pair of Class 26 locomotives and comprised no less than nine bogie vehicles – five carriages and four parcels/newspaper vans. After lengthy stops to unload newspapers and mail en route, the train divided at Georgemas Junction, with arrival into Britain’s most northerly station at around midday – some 21 gruelling hours after I had begun my 741-mile journey in Lewisham!
