Differences are obvious among the Toploader’s 25-spline output shaft (bottom) and its 28- (middle) and truly beefy 31-spline (top) upgrades. The latter shaft was exclusive to close-ratio gearboxes. (Photo Courtesy David Kee Toploader Transmissions, Inc.)

Even a blind person can see which of these top-loader input shafts was used behind Ford’s most punishing V-8 big-blocks. Diameters were 1.0625 inches for the Clark Kent shaft (left) and an indestructible 1.375 for its cape-worthy counterpart (right). (Photo Courtesy David Kee Toploader Transmissions, Inc.)

As for transmission choices, a 3-speed manual was standard behind both 351s but thankfully wasn’t offered to FE big-block buyers, who could chose between the 4-speed manual and SelectShift Cruise-O-Matic automatic options. Two Toploader four-gears were listed, a wide-ratio with a 2.78:1 1st gear and a close-ratio with a 2.32:1 low. Each was available behind the Windsors and the 390, but the Cobra Jet was limited to the close-ratio unit. As its name implied, Ford’s auto box could be shifted manually or operated hands-off conventionally, per a driver’s prerogative. The optional Cruise-O-Matic in the 351 was Ford’s FMX automatic; FE installations mandated the burly C6.
