8-2. Whatever machine and holding fixture the restoration company uses, a high degree of accuracy is required to ensure the true vertical movement of the cutter while the head always stays absolutely horizontal. This machine has been especially modified to ensure these requirements are met, and that the speed of the cutter is compatible with the machining of both cylinder head recesses, and the subsequent work required in the sintered exhaust valve seat inserts.

Next up is driving the inserts into their recessed bores as per photograph 8-4. The picture is slightly deceptive in that the mandrel mentioned earlier is in place to ensure the insert can only be driven home square to the valve guide. Although already an interference fit, the insert plays its part, too, by expanding into the bored recess, thus providing a dependable valve seat that will not move even at the elevated temperatures in a combustion chamber.
