Since 1999, when the first few miles of the Monon Trail were completed in Indianapolis, the route has been wildly successful—so much so that residents in Carmel, north of the trail’s then-endpoint, demanded that they too should have the benefits of this incredible resource. Trail advocates organized, elected a pro-trail candidate on the city council, and built the extension (this section is locally known as the Monon Greenway). Today, the 27.1-mile route sees an incredible 1.4 million users a year, and the Monon now extends farther north to Sheridan.

The impressive Monon Trail begins in a rather unimpressive way near a snarl of interstate ramps just north of downtown Indianapolis. While this may not be the most picturesque start, it is a reminder that this is at its core an urban trail connecting the city with northern suburbs. The location also serves as a convenient link to another Indy trail success story, the Indianapolis Cultural Trail, which begins directly across 10th Street and travels through five cultural districts within the city.
