Nestor Panchal opened the door to the room he shared with Peter Gordon and smiled.

No more roommate.

That asshole Gordon finally got what was coming to him. Too bad it didn’t happen sooner. The loud music every night, the people showing up at all hours to buy or smoke pot, the skunk-stink of weed everywhere…he’d been the worst roommate ever. So bad that Nestor spent most of his time in the library or hanging out in the lounge with a few other kids who preferred video games and TV to getting wasted and staying up all night. There’d been several times he almost went to the Resident Assistant and complained, but he knew better. You didn’t do that, especially not as a freshman. He hadn’t needed anyone to tell him the pecking order when he arrived and found himself placed with a junior.

It didn’t matter that the Panchal family had money, or that he’d gotten into Green Mountain School on his grades, or that he played two sports.

First-year student from a different country. If he got off on the wrong foot with the older kids, his next four years would be hell.

Now I don’t have to worry!

He crossed the room and opened one of the windows. Even with Gordon gone for a week now, the place still reeked. Then he tossed his books on what used to be Gordon’s bed and flopped into his chair. Technically, Gordon was only suspended, pending expulsion. But from what he’d heard, the expulsion hearing was merely a formality. Gordon had dug too deep a hole. He wasn’t coming back. And from what Peter had said, Green Mountain was his last chance. After this, it was military school.

Serves you right, pendejo. I hope they make your life as miserable as you made mine.

He spun around in his chair to face his laptop. With everyone else gone for spring break, there wasn’t much to do on campus except study and play video games. Which was fine by him. Going home meant helping the family run one of the two hotels they owned in Costa Rica. Not exactly a vacation. He put on his headphones and logged into the World of Warfare website.

“Greetings, Captain Panchal,” the game intoned, as his avatar appeared on the screen.

Other names popped up along one side, remote players like him from around the world. Some he recognized. One of the avatars on the battlefield paused and waved.

“Hey, Nestor,” a voice said in his headphones.

“Hola, Matthias.”

A warm breeze blew across his back, bringing with it the unpleasant smell of swamp water. He thought about closing the window, but he didn’t want to pause the game.

“Nestor Panchal.”

Nestor frowned. He didn’t recognize the deep, gravelly voice. He eyed the screen, but none of the other players were paying attention to his avatar. With a shrug, he lifted his gun and waded into battle against the alien horde swarming over the ridge ahead of them. Maybe someone had decided to disguise their voice for the game.

Or maybe the game gave the aliens the power of speech at this level.
