The left screen shows a guard sector set on the starboard bow to warn if the vessel approaches too close to shore, while still leaving the port side unguarded so passing vessels do not set off the alarm. If the shoreline image enters the guard sector it will set off an alarm. The right screen shows a guard ring set at anchor. If the vessel swings enough to bring the guard ring into contact with the land, an alarm will sound.

Regardless of the application, you must test this option carefully and study the setup options to be sure that it works as desired before relying on it for any crucial data, and check that you can hear and identify the alarm. Most stock internal alarms I have heard are not loud enough to offer warning very far from the unit, or the alarm sounds just like the alarm on another instrument. Some units offer an inexpensive optional external alarm buzzer that would benefit anyone using alarm features when sailing shorthanded.
