Knapp sounded slightly apologetic in his postrace comments. “I wouldn’t have beaten [Regret] if I had been sure she would win,” the jockey told the press. “Old Rosebud was coming fast at the end, and rather than take any chances of defeat, I moved up and went past the mare.”9

Connelly fielded questions from a reporter before catching a train to Latonia, perhaps trying to preemptively absolve himself of blame for what some would say was a premature move in the stretch. “At the sixteenth pole I felt sure of winning,” the rider said:

Rosebud was going strong under me, and I was in the lead. Yes, I was a good neck in front of Regret who was tiring fast from cutting out that terrific pace. To keep him ahead I cut him twice with the whip. Then what does the honest old feller do but hang—something he had never done under me before. He was beaten but they had to smash the world’s record to do it. It was a great race and no disgrace for a cripple like Rosebud to lose. If he stands up, he’ll show you Easterners some great performances.10
