CHAPTER 26

A LAPTOP AND A DEAL

“Deputy Carlson speaking.”

“This is Emma Smith.”

“Oh, hi, Emma. I’m surprised you’re up already.”

“I had a hard time sleeping. I’m worried about my uncle, and I really need to reach my dad. I was wondering if maybe I could borrow someone’s laptop? The hospital has Wi-Fi, and I could maybe reach one of my friends and have them or their parents check on my dad. He isn’t answering his phone, he might’ve lost it, he does that, but I know he would check on his work email.”

“That’s a good idea, Emma. If we’d had it last night, maybe he would be here by now. I have an old one at the station that we’re not using. I’ll stop by to pick it up and then bring it to you.”

“Thanks!”

“See you in an hour or so.”

Emma turned to Lazarus. “The deputy is bringing a laptop in about an hour.”

“Good. See if you can get the nurses or someone to let us both eat in here.”

Ten minutes later, they were eating in his room. As the nurse left, he said, “Nice people. I am really hoping that our presence doesn’t cause problems for them. We need to get out of here. We were lucky that the storm was so heavy. It will cause enough chaos around the lake that we will be hard to find. It probably grounded commercial planes, and there are probably other emergencies on the lake because of it.

“I’m not that familiar with Lake Superior law enforcement, but I have to assume our names and descriptions went out as people rescued from the lake. That is good. It will help your father find us, but it also means if Golkachek or others are tracking us, they will find us. That kind of police report is easy to get, and it is at least possible that they are on their way.”

“Why are they so mean?”

He could feel the ten-year-old in her question.

“The truth is… I am not sure, but the agency your father and I work for is an important place, and as one of the primary tech guys, your father is pretty important. They may very well be after him for information he has, or that he can lead them too.”

Shortly after their not too terrible hospital breakfast, the deputy came in smiling. “Hey, Emma. I brought you that laptop.” He handed her an older Dell laptop. Emma took it with a big smile.

“Do everything you can do to connect with your father or anyone else in your family. I’ll be in and out, though. With everything that happened overnight, I’m going to have a very busy morning.

“I will help her, Deputy. We will locate her father or someone else in the family. Or maybe I can have a friend FedEx my passport up here for your ID.”

“Good, that would help. We took your fingerprints last night and nothing’s come back yet. At least that means you’re not on the FBI’s most wanted list. Those pop up first.
