Our complex identities can shape the specific way we each experience bias.

Disadvantage or exclusion can be based on the interaction of multiple factors rather than just one.

Going beyond the conventional single-axis analysis is required in order to focus attention on harms that otherwise might not be recognized.

An analysis without a multidimensional framework can replicate the very patterns of social exclusion it seeks to combat.

Intersectionality provides a critical lens for bringing awareness and capacity to social justice efforts in order to expand and deepen interventions (Crenshaw & Harris, 2009; Hankivsky et al., 2014).

An intersectional perspective suggests that the consequences of placement in foster care cannot be fully understood independent of the multiple systems in which children may find themselves centered as a result of placement. Foster care placement may present children of color with new physical, emotional, and psychological territory to navigate. In addition, for some children of color, the experience of foster care placement can in itself contribute to a new dimension of identity as a “foster child” that my interact with racial/ethnic identity in complex ways that can influence the child’s self-concept, as well as how they are treated by others. Depending on the child’s developmental stage, this may involve new self-evaluations and new awareness of how they may be perceived by others based on where they live, with whom they live, and with which systems they are connected.
