In a rejoinder to this critique, New York magazine writer Jonathan Chait defended Obama against Coatesâs criticism on the grounds that Obama had a very different perspective from Paul Ryan, who believes that liberal policies are responsible for the âcycle of poverty.â By contrast, according to Chait, âObamaâs habit of speaking about this issue primarily to black audiencesâ is Obama âseizing upon his role as the most famous and admired African American in the world to urge positive habits and behavior.â4 Indeed, Obama acknowledges that not only does he address predominantly black audiences differently than he does predominantly white audiences, but as an African American man, he views himself as being uniquely positioned to urge positive habits and behavior among African Americans:
