One of the local groups with whom MTOPP collaborates is the Crown Heights Tenants Union. CHTU members often participate in events sponsored by MTOPP as they share a common concern about displacement of lower income and nonwhite tenants from area apartments.

Our Story

The Crown Heights Tenant Union (CHTU) is a union of Tenant Associations, that began meeting in October 2013 in response to rampant gentrification, displacement, and illegal rental overcharges in the neighborhood. There are over 40 buildings in our union that have come together to demand new, stronger protections that guarantee tenants’ rights.

CHTU employs collective bargaining strategies to demand enforce tenants’ rights as well as removing legal loopholes favoring landlords. Beyond a stronger voice for tenants, CHTU seeks a five-year rent freeze as well as restrictions on tenant buyouts. The organization has noted a process by which low paying tenants are pushed out, in favor of new ones who are charged far higher rents than legally allowed. CHTU’s UNITE AND FIGHT strategy aims to bring old and new tenants together to fight their common enemy, landlords. CHTU is supported by the Urban Homesteading Assistance Board which provides technical assistance to building residents seeking to democratically control and manage their homes.
