Chapter 18

Peeing Outside

As the afternoon waned, the lack of running water became more of an issue. We were eating a high-fiber diet. I wasn’t sure, but it tasted like the tortillas may have even had sand in them. The green drink alone could cause a sudden, giant bowel movement. As a result, we were spending most of our time lugging heavy buckets of water from the river to the bathroom. The beating tropical sun made excessive lifting, torturous. The task, sloppy. We all complained, and I suspected that anybody who went swimming urinated in the river.

Understandably, the older kids were seen periodically peeing in the woods, the girls squatting and the boys splattering the low-lying leaves. This caused Jack to bristle. “What if our little ones see them?”

So what? I thought. It hadn’t even occurred to me to let the kids pee outside, but now that a few were, it seemed a perfect solution to such a tedious situation. Besides, going to the bathroom outside would only be temporary—until the workmen fixed the pipe. But then, what did I know about bad habits and good habits? About how easy it was to break a good habit, exchanging it for a bad habit, and never being able to retrieve the good one again. So, when I said, “Come on Jack, why not?” I was truly in the dark about the ‘why we shouldn’t.’

Gunther, too, thought it was a splendid idea to let the kids pee outside. But Gunther, who I was getting to know, did not believe in common sense at all, which he had pointed out the day before, and continued to point it out. While we stood outside the dormitorio door with empty buckets to collect water, he said, “It’s luck that is the balls. Without it, every living creature is doomed.” So, when he let Wooter and Albert urinate into a puddle of muddy water by the washbasin, and I scolded him for doing so because it wasn’t sanitary—Gunther matter-of-factly snapped back, “Bloody hell, do you not listen. Luck will prevent you from coming down with a disease. Besides, pee is ammonia. You’re better off walking through the peed in puddles than the non-peed in one’s.” Then he suggested that during my next trip to El Pueblito (because I was now the designated driver for the orphanage, which I didn’t mind because it allowed me a tasty meal once a week) that I should look into some pharmaceuticals to “foster a more positive outlook on life.”

“Whatever,” I remarked, not wanting to argue because his remark was stupid.

But as luck would have it, Jack, who had been leaning against a corner of the dormitorio with his chin in his hands, a pose he often took whether thinking or not, had heard Gunther tell Wooter and Albert to pee in the puddle. Before he could storm over, the boys were finished. Catching his wide-eyed look and gaping mouth, I smiled. This should be interesting.

“Christ! Hell! Shit!” Jack snapped. His sandals slapping through the wet ground.
