$$$$ Hotel Termas Papallacta, at the Termas complex, comfortable heated rooms and suites, good expensive restaurant, thermal pools set in a lovely garden, Wi-Fi in computer room, nice lounge with fireplace, some rooms have a private jacuzzi, also cabins for up to 6 ($$$$), transport from Quito extra. Guests are provided with identification and can enter any part of the complex and get discounts at the spa. For weekends and holidays book a room at least a month in advance. Recommended.
$$ Antizana, on road to the Termas, a short walk from the complex, T232 0626. Simple rooms, restaurant, cheaper with shared bath, 2 thermal pools, a good option.
$$ La Choza de Don Wilson, at intersection of old unpaved road and road to Termas, T232 0627. Simple rooms with nice views of the valley, includes breakfast, good popular restaurant, hot water, pool, massage, spa run by physiotherapist, very attentive proprietors.
$ Coturpa, next to the Municipal baths in Papallacta town, T232 0640. Restaurant open weekends, hot water, thermal pool and sauna, rooms are functional but very small.
East of Papallacta
$$$ Guango Lodge, near Cuyuja, 9 km east of Papallacta, T02-290 9027 (Quito), www.cabanasanisidro.com. In a 350-ha temperate forest reserve along the RÃo Papallacta. Includes 3 good meals, nice facilities, excellent birdwatching (grey-breasted mountain toucans are regularly seen here). Day visits cost US$5 per person. Reservations required.

A dramatic dome-shaped lodge perched in beautiful cloudforest, includes full board (good food, vegetarian on request), 14 rooms with private bath; $$$ pp in dorm, simple accommodation in research area, also a hill cottage away from main building, camping US$7 pp. Package tours can be arranged including transport from Quito and guide, best booked in advance. Recommended.
$$$$ San Jorge, T339 0403, www.eco-lodgesanjorge.com. A series of reserves with lodges in bird-rich areas. One is 4 km from Quito see HosterÃa San Jorge), one in Tandayapa at 1500 m and another in Milpe, off the paved road, at 900 m.
$$$$ Tandayapa Bird Lodge, T244 7520 (Quito), www.tandayapa.com. Designed and owned by birders. Full board, 12 very comfortable rooms with hot water, some rooms have a canopy platform for observation, large common area for socializing, packages available including guide and transport from Quito.
The paved route
$$$$ Maquipucuna Lodge, T02-250 7200, 09-237 1945, www.maqui.org. Comfortable rustic lodge, includes full board with good meals using ingredients from own organic garden (vegetarian and vegan available). Rooms range from shared to rooms with bath, hot water, electricity. Campsite is 20 minsâ walk from main lodge, $ pp (food extra), cooking lessons, chocolate massages, bar.
$$$$ Santa LucÃa, T02-215 7242, www.santaluciaecuador.com. The lodge with panoramic views is a 1½-hr walk from the access to the reserve. Price includes full board with good food and guiding. There are cabins with private bath, rooms with shared composting toilets and hot showers and dorms ($ per person including food but not guiding).
