EXERCISE STATION FOR
Questioning
Write down some questions you would ask Yvonne, so you can compare your approach to the ideas I am about to put forward.
Weâll get back to what you wrote in a moment. First, Iâd like to tell you how I came up with my ideas about questioning. Over several years I had the privilege of watching hundreds of professionals interact with other peopleâs dilemmas as they participated in exercises in my workshops. Over time I saw a defined set of common approaches people used when they tried to question others. These include giving advice in question form, focusing on the problems, focusing on the details, rushing into action, and telling people how to think. As I illustrate each of our default modes for questioning next, take a look at what you wrote down in this last exercise and see if you can distinguish your own default approach here.
While these approaches to questioning sometimes resulted in useful conversations, they were definitely not taking the shortest distance from A to B. Over years of analyzing these interactions, I discovered there was another way of asking questions that was much more effective than all the others, and it was a way that few people naturally used. I will outline this best approach after going through the other approaches.
