Game Day Baked Beans

1 16-oz.

can baked beans

1/4 c.

onion, chopped

1/4 c.

brown sugar

2 T.

honey

2 t.

Dijon mustard

1/2 c.

ketchup

1/2 t.

salt

4 slices

bacon, uncooked

Preheat the oven to 350degF. Grease an ovenproof pan or Dutch oven. Combine the beans, onion, brown sugar, and honey, and mix lightly. Add the mustard, ketchup, and salt, and mix again. Place the slices of bacon over the top of the beans and bake uncovered for 30 to 40 minutes or until the bacon is cooked crisp and the beans are heated throughout. Makes 6 servings.

Kids can help with this recipe:

1. Older kids can, with supervision, open the can of beans with a can opener.

2. Measure the chopped onion, brown sugar, honey, mustard, ketchup, and salt.

Add to the beans and combine.

3. Place the bacon slices on top of the beans.

Teachable Moment: Ketchup is considered America's favorite condiment. Over 97% of US households have a bottle of ketchup. Ketchup was first imported to Europe from China (it was called "ketsiap") in the 1600's, but it did not contain tomatoes. Tomato-based ketchup was first produced in the 1800's.
