After fifteen minutes in the restroom spent running her forearms underwater and trying to get the expired food out of her hair, Kaien finally joined Ulrich and Josef in the library’s main reading area.

For Kaien, the cool interior and smell of old books were the closest things to heaven on Ddraiggonia. It was evident the twins had washed up in the restroom as there was no longer any separated mayonnaise or weevilly flour clinging to their golden scales. And now that Ulrich’s mane wasn’t slicked back, he and Josef really did look like identical twins. At a distance, it would have been hard to tell the two apart, but Ulrich’s ego always gave him away.

“Ve got out of zhe NPM just in time,” Josef said when he spotted her. He pointed to a ulexite transmitter stone in the employee break room.

Many of the librarians and shelvers huddled around the screen and whispered to each other in distraught tones. A frenzy-eyed, sobbing shopper was being interviewed by a news reporter.

“I hope no one got seriously hurt,” Kaien said softly.

“Me too,” Josef agreed, resting his chin on one of his talons.

“It wouldn’t surprise me vone bit if zhere aren’t at least a few broken bones and torn vings,” Ulrich unhelpfully said.

That’s not exactly looking at things glass half-full.

“Do you think the Rabenschwarz will be called in?” Kaien asked, raising an eyebrow at the twins.

“It’s his day off, but zhat’s not to say zhe Four Constellations von’t order him to go zhere anyvay.” Ulrich ran a talon through his mane. “Zhough it is doubtful since zhe damage is already done and everyvone knows who zhe culprit is.”

“Then it’s a good thing Queen Whiltierna will have the NPM rebuilt by tomorrow morning,” Kaien remarked.

Josef turned to her, his brow ridges raised in surprise. “She can do that?”

“Well, technically, she’ll have the other kitsunes do the dirty work, but they are quite efficient when they want to be,” Kaien clarified, giving Josef a small smile. “They’re not always practical jokers.”

“That vill certainly be interesting to see tomorrow morning,” Ulrich said. “So, vhy did you vant to come here, Kaien?”

“I’m going to see if I can find any information on unicorns and their home planet,” Kaien said, pulling her attention away from the chaos displayed on the transmitter screen and heading over to the history section. She figured that would be the best place to start researching the Alicorn War and the Sword of Alicorn.

“But isn’t Alicorn your home planet too?” Josef asked, falling into step beside her.

The Dragon Flank Library had many bookshelves, but they didn’t seem as tall as the ones in the Butterfly Bookshop, nor were the books as old.

Kaien shook her head. “Not really. I was born and raised here on Ddraiggonia. Other than my parents, I really don’t have any personal ties to Alicorn.”

Josef’s tapped his chin in thought. “Makes sense. But vhy zhe sudden interest?”

“Because I’m sick of all this secrecy!” Kaien snapped. “From the Sword of Alicorn to you
