Let me out! I can smell humans. One's a virgin, and one isn't. I want the virgin. Kered screamed inside Derek's mind, but Derek refused to let the demon win.

"Hell fucking no. I'm not letting you touch a soul ever again." He spoke out loud, even though it was just him. Speaking out loud gave him better control of himself without giving in to Kered. It was an assurance for him.

Hikers rarely ventured this deeply into the forest, and never any close enough for Kered to detect them so acutely. Keeping himself blocked from the outside world was Derek's only hope of salvation, though, so all he could do was hope they would quickly move beyond the demon's senses. Derek looked out through the window. It was starting to get dark. He picked up the matches next to the window and lit the torch lantern closest to him. The only remotely redeeming quality about being half demon was the magic he was able to cast. He only needed to put a fire in one lantern, and then he could mumble a spell to light the rest.

The single room cabin instantly brightened. A full-sized bed and a nightstand were pushed against the wall in the far right corner. On the left was the kitchen, with a butcher-block counter and wood stove. It wasn't anything fancy, since Derek really didn't need to eat much. He took showers and did his business outside as well. Every day he wasn't bored because of the hard battle he'd invariably have with Kered. It didn't mean Derek enjoyed the arguments.

The humans are close, please! I'm hungry for their bodies. I won't kill, promise!

"Demons don't promise, and the answer's still no." He managed to stay calm. If he lost his temper, Kered would come out without any struggle. Derek remembered what happened on his date with Matthew; he'd been pissed before he entered the restroom. That was when Kered had come out and killed Matthew. Derek had to do everything to stay as sane as he could now. He couldn't become depressed or angry. Being calm and positive was the only way he could trap Kered. It had taken years for Derek to figure that out, but he had.

Outside the cabin, Derek could hear a voice say, "That's just great! We're lost."

A second voice answered, "No, we're not lost. Trust me."

"Shit, they're close," Derek whispered. "Too fucking close. I've got to get away and hide. Fast."
