Chapter 10

“It worries me how many tunnels, and how many entries, there are,” Nadia commented while keeping watch down the empty street. They were right outside the Palace grounds now, entering the tunnels via a basement in one of the old mansions which had historically housed peripheral members of the royal family. It was empty now. According to Kary, it was usually occupied by an older aunt of the Queen, but none of them could hear any sign of life within. Nor could either of them smell the scent of death, so they assumed she and her servants had gone elsewhere during the new reign.

“The tunnels are for emergencies. Like when we had to evacuate the Queen and her children in a hurry,” Kary explained.

“Oh, I remember. But why so many tunnels under the Cube? Which the Wraiths don’t know about?”

“Many routes mean many evacuation plans.”

“I don’t doubt it, yet those particular tunnels lead straight between the Palace and the Cube. Not outside. Funny that.”

Kary scoffed softly, the corner of his mouth twitching. “I suppose all manner of precautions were taken when everything was built and then expanded centuries ago.”

“In case the Wraiths needed to be taken out?” Nadia couldn’t help thinking back to the sight of all the Wraiths on the floors of the Cube.

“I suppose, in case the Ghosts ever were to become the last defense.”

“The two guards are separated for a reason,” Nadia said and looked at Harmiston, who’d pulled a sheath of paper out to read. He’d mentioned that to her once, and he was right. If one of them betrayed the Queen, then it would be easier to handle the traitors if there weren’t old friendships in the way.

“They are,” Kary agreed and turned when Ayd approached them, opening the front door.

“The building is clear. Barkin found the tunnel entrance.”

“Then let’s go,” Kary said and opened the door wider.

They followed Ayd through a richly furnished house to the back area where the servants usually ruled. From there they went down into the basement and then further down into a root cellar, which housed a small hatch in the wall behind old shelves. The air felt and smelled raw, reminding Nadia of the tunnels to the degree that she knew they were on the right way.

“All right,” Kary whispered. They were too close to possible guards down there to talk loudly. It would be whispering, if that, from there on. “Here’s the last of it.” He reached into one of his pockets and carefully withdrew several dried luminescent asphodels, or bland asphodels, as they were more commonly known. The Ghosts had managed to bring some along into their exile, but this was the end of it. Still, to find the devices, the team had been granted this helpful weapon. Being trapped in tunnels with hybrids, werewolves, and vampires required the possibility of not being detected by their sensitive noses. Harmiston’s shield had been an unexpected bonus, and Nadia felt better about their chances now than before
