I woke delightfully sore in James’s bed with Peter passed out next to me and cold ruffled sheets on the other side of me. The sun had still not risen and the soft glow of moonlight filtered into the room. James was standing at the large window looking out to the sea. I crossed the room and joined him, stroking his enchanted tattoo. It wasn’t the first time I had seen aubergine blood.

“I dreamt once that my blood was this very color. It was after the attack at Amara’s camp. While I was recovering from injury.”

“Those who have been altered by magic sometimes bleed aubergine. It doesn’t happen to everyone. Has yours changed yet?” He paused, waiting for an answer that wasn’t coming. My blood was in fact still red, but James knew me better than I thought. “Back at the temple mount, I saw dark magic in your eyes. Gwen, I’m not a fool. I know something has happened.”

I sighed. “Please be quiet,” I pleaded. “I don’t want Peter or the boys to know.”

His brow furrowed with concern as he turned to face me.

“Amara gifted me an Inalto to help defeat Tiger Lily. I tried not to use it, but I had no choice. She had the upper hand. I had no idea the cost would be so high.”

“My love,” he sighed. “Whose magic have you consumed? Whose soul?”

“Kían, Amara’s mate. And he wants me to kill one of my boys, to achieve vengeance. Amara said it’s his way of changing the outcome of his fate? All I know is I keep getting possessed by his soul. James, I’ve already tried to kill them.”

He stared at me silently, listening. “When was the last time you tried?”

“He used me to try to kill Amara just yesterday.” I was mortified speaking it out loud. “I have discovered that pain seems to keep him at bay.” I dropped my head in shame. “I’ve been secretly hurting myself to keep him away. I assume it’s why he hasn’t come to the surface tonight.”

“My love—”

“James,” I interrupted. “I can’t. I won’t kill one of them. I’d choose death over losing any of you ever again.” Tears welled in my eyes. “Amara said you might have a way to suppress him. Something called Moonflower?”

“My love, Datura, or as you called it Moonflower, is extremely toxic. There is no guarantee that it would even work. In fact the only guarantee is your death, or worse. I can not give you this.”

“But I have no other choice. I won’t survive if he succeeds. I need to try.”

James wiped the tears that were now streaming down my cheeks before pulling me into an embrace. “We will find another way, my love, but I can not aid in your death.” He leaned down and kissed me softly. “We will find a way. Even if I have to keep you tied up and spanked for the rest of your days.” A sinister grin crept across his face.

“I can think of worse ways to spend my days.
