The roar of my dragoness vibrated throughout me. I heard her—she was really there.

Riley was in front of me, looking scared out of her mind as she shook her head to herself. And I wanted to tell her not to be—it was okay. I would never hurt her.

She was my family. My gods, she really was my family—I smelled her. My dragoness smelled her through my nostrils, and she recognized her—she was just like us. An Azarius. A dragoness.

And we would protect her at all costs.

Right now, we both needed to get out of here.

“What are you doing—stop! Stop it!” Riley cried out, but I couldn’t speak at all.

Because I felt it, felt the way my bones were preparing to break, and felt the rage of my dragoness that had been held back for days. I felt the way her energy filled my body, charged my every cell like electricity, bringing me back to life.

Nobody was here to hold her back now. She was ready.

The door burst open, and I no longer had it in me to panic, to fear. All I could do was let go and feel the shifting pains breaking me wide open as the dragoness took over.

“What have you done, you little brat?!”

Alexandra’s voice rang in my ears. I only had one second to see her slap Riley across the face, throw her to the floor—and I screamed.

A roar came out of me instead.

Alexandra’s lifeless eyes were wide as she watched me becoming bigger and bigger.

“No,” she breathed, but it was already done. The chains that had been around my wrists groaned as my skin, now covered in scales, expanded. Magic danced on it, but it was ticklish against my scales. It couldn’t get through them, couldn’t enter my blood stream.

It was done. It was over. Nothing was going to stop us now.

My dragoness was fully shifted, and the pain faded to a light throbbing. The chains around me broke, the links falling to the floor. My wings spread to the sides, stretching wide, before my dragoness jumped—and went right through the roof.

I was finally free.

We went through concrete like it wasn’t even there. Daylight exploded around us. Wood and glass and walls breaking but none of it stopped me. None of it stopped the dragoness.

It felt like she’d grown a bit since last time, but I couldn’t be sure. I just had the impression that her wings were wider and stronger, and when there was no more concrete holding us back, we shot at the blue sky, the grey clouds, the sun just preparing to set.

We breathed freely, and my dragoness cried out at the top of her voice as she looked down at the ground again. The lake was close—Lake Michigan. And lighthouses dotted the east shore, and there were people out in the street, looking at us, screaming. My dragoness wasn’t bothered. We had to go back for Riley. Just grab her and get the hell out of here as fast as we could, but….
