But the Matron-in-Chief’s task in France was by no means a question of just caring for Kings and Field-Marshals. Dame Maud’s reports are filled, in meticulous detail, with accounts of casualties among her nurses, the numbers of Casualty Clearing Stations and hospitals and the numbers of nurses staffing them. Recreation (of which there was singularly little: QAs were not allowed to go to dances in France), discipline, living conditions and leave rotas were all her responsibility.

Her annual report for 1916 ended:

‘Much has been written and said at different times about the relationship between the trained and the untrained, but anyone who has seen them working together during the weeks following the Battle of the Somme would have realized that any feeling there might have been was only of a most superficial character, and that each was only too anxious to help the other, so that they might the better devote themselves to the service of the sick and wounded.’
