Chapter Fourteen
AVA
“Jesus, Ava, don’t you ever get tired of overthinking everything to damn death? Dreaming up problems that don’t exist?” He’s calling me out and I know I’ll have to put my best argument out there to even have a chance of getting a word in edgewise with him. He’s grumpier and more determined than ever and I’m pissed that I let him get to me, again. But the way he stormed in here, demanding Marcy leave before he crashed into me…that kind of reckless desperation isn’t something I’ve ever been up against, nor can I resist it.
“I’m not,” I lie.
“Great. Then let’s watch the end of this game together. We’ll leave the lights off so no one can see us in here.” He emits total confidence as he adjusts his clothes and takes a seat by the glass, looking down at his team. “Fuck, Pierce! Pull your head outta your ass and catch the damn ball.”
I move slowly, pulling on the pants I ripped off like a whore earlier. I’m still dripping with the proof of how good we are together, so I stop dressing to grab a towel from the table and do something I never thought I’d find occasion to do. As if the sexiest man alive isn’t in the room, or I’m not internally cringing with embarrassment, I wipe the cum from between my legs and then finish pulling my jeans over my hips. And, with still-flaming cheeks, I hide the towel under the same table where I found it…classy.
Don’t know why I worried what he’d think, Rush didn’t notice a thing, too engrossed in what’s happening on the field. “Watch this, he’s going to throw it long. Keep your eyes on Ty, number twenty-three.” His voice is passionate as he commentates, pointing out Ty for me. I watch the ball leave the quarterback’s hand, sailing almost halfway down the field before landing perfectly in Ty’s grip. Ty runs it in for six points and dances in celebration. “Look at that cocky asshole,” Rush laughs. “He loves to showboat and I love when he gets to.” The smile on his face causes something to pang in my chest, for the first time, I truly realize…I like seeing him happy. I’m not supposed to care what he does, or what he likes, but I do.
“Okay, why are you looking at me like that?” He turns away from the game to stare at me as I sit next to him.
“It’s just, I’ve never seen you smile the way you are right now,” I answer faintly, still half-lost in thought.
“You should see me down there. That’s when I’m the happiest.” I believe him. There’s no doubt this man loves the game. I simply nod, no other response needed.
We watch the rest of the game together, laughing and cheering every time Thunder makes a good play, which is often. “They’re on fire today.” He turns to face me at my comment and watches in silence as I awkwardly smile and look down at my hands.
