The second theme that evolved from the data was that of encountering. Within this theme, a strong sense of appreciation was also evident. Encountering was defined as going, doing, and seeing with particular emphasis on the sense of sight. Many participants offered examples of what they witnessed visually during their experience abroad providing evidence that sight was the strongest of the five senses. Encountering reflected the main purpose of study abroad programs, to foster appreciation of the richly contextual array of diverse, sensory experiences one encounters, largely unscheduled, but anticipated. Within this theme, it was discovered that students took advantage of the diverse encounters by actively seeking them out. This finding was somewhat convergent with a theme described by Grant and McKenna (2003) known as “having a go.” Their qualitative study findings suggested that Australian nursing students who studied abroad in England and Northern Ireland must display initiative and make the most out of the experience.
