Sometimes, it is easier to use positive character class and negate the re.search result instead of using negated character class.

>>> words = ['tryst', 'fun', 'glyph', 'pity', 'why'] # words not containing vowel characters >>> [w for w in words if re.search(r'\A[^aeiou]+\Z', w)] ['tryst', 'glyph', 'why'] # easier to write and maintain, note the 'not' logical operator # but this'll match empty strings too unlike the previous solution >>> [w for w in words if not re.search(r'[aeiou]', w)] ['tryst', 'glyph', 'why']
