NICK'S PLEA

MACKENZIE

Now dressed, I emerged from the station—my deliciously sore nether regions throbbing with every step—and ran a hand along the gleaming firetruck sitting out in the sun to dry. Ryan’s woodsy scent remained wrapped around me, like a favorite cloak, making me wish I could roll in it every damned day because it smelled so good.

Of course, I was so fucking high on sex hormones that I didn’t even notice the shadow of The Joker looming up behind me until it was too late.

Damnit, how does he do that?!

The Joker hauled me roughly by the arm round the end of the truck and out of sight of his crew, throwing me up against the gleaming truck hard enough that I saw stars. Gongzilla growled. This was getting to be a habitual greeting for this jerk and my inner beasty didn’t like it one bit. She clacked her beak at him in warning.

Through my lips she taunted, “Careful, Joker. You’re under hisss protection. For now.”

The Joker flashed bloody murder in Nick’s eyes. If I didn’t know any better, the animal was delighted at the idea of a rumble with Gongzilla. But Nick scowled, smacking the upside of his head, quite literally, to tell the animal inside of him to piss off. He’d make a pretty penny at a sideshow, I’d give him that.

I rolled my eyes. Yeah, I was done with this conversation and it hadn’t even started yet. Moving to go, I stilled at the crackling pain in Nick’s gritty voice. “Please, Mackenzie. I need to talk to you.”

I raised an eyebrow and crossed my arms, waiting for him to continue.

“I—You’re not what he needs.”

The words tumbled out of him on a breath and the man tensed, as if he expected me to come at him for having the audacity to speak his mind. I have to admit, I was tempted. Gongzilla would certainly back me. But his words rocked through my core.

You’re not what he needs.

The breath had left my body as sure as if the bastard had struck me, tearing off chunks of my soul with glee. It hurt more than I could put into words. The truth often does. But it wasn’t exactly a newsflash, was it? I knew it. Hell, even his thick-headed alpha knew it. And yet, it wasn’t any of this asshole’s business how far down the rabbit hole we were prepared to go, now, was it?!

I shouldered past him, making sure to give him a good check on the way through. Gongzilla lent me a little oomph and the man stumbled back a step, causing his words to tumble out of him in a blind panic.

“Please, Mac. Just hear me out and, when I’ve said my piece, I’ll back off.” I scoffed a laugh and Nick grinned lopsidedly at me. His eyes sparkled. He was really quite handsome when he wasn’t showing his crazy. “I said I’d back off. I can’t speak for The Joker.”

Something about the bitterness in the way Nick spoke the last sentence had my ears a-prickling.
