Probably he’d be wearing all black. That was Gleason’s signature look. Black and red. I didn’t want to compete or, God forbid, upstage him, so I decided on my antique white tuxedo shirt, to let him know what a special occasion I knew this was and also because the tuxedo shirt made me look pretty incredible. I wore my burgundy smoking jacket, almost-skinny black jeans, and these stiletto-toed patent leathers with Cuban heels. I slicked my hair back, and finally I dusted my face ever so slightly with just enough color to make me look what I called “sun-kissed.”

Of course when Angie saw me, the first thing she said was, “I’m really surprised you think that’s subtle, Carlos. You’re a professional makeup artist. You look like you got caught in a blush storm!” Then she laughed hysterically, like she thought she was giving Kathy Griffin something to worry about. She stopped when she saw how beyond unfunny I’d found it.

“I’m sorry, hon,” she cooed. “I’m only trying to be a good friend and tell you the truth. I know you’re trying to impress the boy, but you don’t want to show up looking like RuPaul either, do you? And wouldn’t you want me to tell you the truth if that’s what I thought?”

“Yeah, Ange. RuPaul, huh? That’s definitely not what I was going for. I don’t know how I could have miscalculated so badly.” I never, ever fix my makeup in public—I think it’s tacky when anyone does. But I didn’t want to walk into the gallery with the blush storm effect either, so even though I don’t usually take makeup or fashion tips from Angie, who was in very large polka dots, I took a little color off just to make sure.

When I went to a flower stand outside a little bodega and bought a dozen roses to give to Gleason, Angie kept her opinions to herself. I’m sure she knew she’d ruin the evening if she said anything at all about it. I got a little card and wrote, “To a great guy who takes great pictures. From one of your biggest admirers.” I would have said “absolute biggest,” but I was trying to be subtle.
