Chapter Eight

Serena placed the items she and Luis had taken from the antique store in the middle of her living room. She’d pushed the furniture back moments before, the better to work.

Her fingers were steady as she positioned the candles around the witches’ possessions. North. East. South. West. She lit the candles with a wave of her hand. She’d sat her scrying mirror down near the sofa. She picked it up, aware, as always, of the icy feel of the mirror in her hands.

Serena walked back toward the candles. Put the mirror at her feet. She drew in a deep breath, raised her hands high above her head and began her spell.

“Show me the one who used his spell,

To bind the witches I know too well.

Show me the man—show me the one

Whose magic I seek to have undone.

As I will,

So mote it be.”

A simple spell. One that she wasn’t certain would work. But the warlock had made a mistake. He’d worked magic on the items before her, and the dark magic he’d used left a faint taint. A touch of darkness.

A touch that would reflect him, if her spell worked.

The candles flickered around her.

Serena’s gaze fell to the mirror. She watched as the surface darkened, as if black clouds were sweeping over the face of the mirror. Then the darkness moved faster and faster as the wind blew. Air brushed over her face. Sent the edges of her robe flapping back.

Her body trembled as she poured her magic into the spell and forced the image to sharpen. The strain made her whole body tremble. She wouldn’t be able to last much longer.

Show me the one I seek.

The clouds thickened in the mirror. Pressed closer. Slowly began to form the face of a man.

Blue eyes stared up at her. Clear and sparkling. Dimples winked at her from the sides of his curving mouth. His blond hair blew, as if he, too, felt the breeze stirring in the closed room.

“Got you, bastard.” Luis’s voice rumbled from right behind her.

“Not yet,” Serena muttered as she memorized that face. She’d make sure to never forget him. “But we will.”

The candle flames died. Serena’s arms dropped to her sides. Her gaze was still on the mirror and on the man who laughed up at her.

Luis’s hands wrapped around her waist, and he pulled her tightly against him.

The grinning warlock slowly vanished.

Asshole, we’re coming for you.

“He has more, you know.” Luis picked up the tattered cloth that Serena had assured him several times was actually a swatch of Susan’s quilt. “He wouldn’t have left everything behind. If he had—”

“He wouldn’t have been able to put the second bind on more of the coven, I know.” Serena ran an agitated hand through her curling locks. He loved her hair. The wild curls. The soft, silky feel of the tresses under his fingers.

“Vanessa and Susan were both hit by the jerk this morning. So he has to have more of a stash.” She hauled on her shoes. She’d dressed moments before, though he rather wished she’d just stayed in her silky blue robe.
