The last of the furniture was hauled up the stairs while Garth looked over their new home. The upper levels of the old church were redesigned into eight bed-chambers, three sitting rooms, a small private office, and two bathing rooms—everything their family could have asked for and more. Garth had never once considered asking for help while growing his ever-expanding family of misfits and orphans. From the beginning, he had made this his personal quest. Though he had the support of Captain Drake for the first couple of years, her goal had been to use his travel talent for her gain, not the children’s. Now, over a decade later, he realized how big the dream had grown.

The warlord now made Garth’s quest into a joint venture. By adding some convenient shipping trade transactions into the mix, Garth could better disguise his rescue operations. He’ll still go where his instincts led but would have official reasons to dock in most cities. Since Garth was a wanted man in most parts of the world, he now felt reasonably safe behind the façade of a legitimate cargo hauler.

“Hey, Uncle Gee.” Jancy was out of breath as she entered the small room he had designated as his study. “Have a message from Lady Felicia.” Garth greeted her and took hold of the note.

“Go greet your siblings, sweetheart. They all miss you.” Jancy was the oldest of the brood. Garth found her by chance late one evening while visiting the city of Pulsar, a sprawling seaport that sat mid-coast in the empire province of Thurman. He had just left a bustling dockside tavern on his way to the stable when he heard her cry from an alley. Though it was dark, the red moon of Rachael was burning bright enough to see three men forcing the young girl onto the ground. Garth didn’t even consider ignoring the call. He felt something move deep inside of himself, a premonition or fate.

With a dagger in hand, he grudgingly thanked peddler Vang for all his knife and fighting skills as he rushed in to attack the three assailants. None were left standing, though all were breathing went he ushered Jancy out of the alley. At least two of them would not survive without immediate assistance so before disappearing into the stable, he yelled at a nearby watchman saying that some men were set upon and needed help. That was the most he would do for the men. By the cut of their clothing, they were likely from wealthy families and could afford to hire a healer. They should have hired a prostitute as well, instead of trying to rape a young girl.

Jancy had been only seven years old at the time. She had been sent to the harbormaster with a message from the people who owned her indenture papers. The couple surely knew the danger she would have been in and hadn’t cared. To them, she was a piece of property, one of many. Garth offered her safety. Jancy wasn’t the first child he had rescued, though she was the first female.
