TWENTY-SEVEN

Kyle’s revelation had yet to settle over a minute after the words had escaped his mouth. It was a hefty declaration, and one verified by the Admiral’s expression.

“The text message,” Kyle explained. “It gave us the address of the junkyard. When we showed up there this morning, the owner asked us if we were there to pick up a part for an ’04 Silverado. He said he was expecting someone that morning. Assumed it was us.”

Harrington leaned back. Crossed his arms and gave a knowing nod. “The vehicle my oldest son was driving when he was in the accident. Will must have called the junkyard anonymously and asked about the part to try and subtly leave you guys a hint as to his motive.”

I leaned forward, rubbed my forehead. “So, all of this,” I said, “this entire mess was started by his own design? Will trying to get back at them for what they did to James?”

“Not just get back,” Harrington said. “He’s not looking to settle a score. Make things even. He’s looking to bring the entire operation down. He’s looking to wreck them. But it takes time, if you want to do it right. I get that now. I didn’t understand. I couldn’t understand. He couldn’t tell me anything. It was all for my own safety, and for plausible deniability. He made me promise not to go looking for him.”

“Does he know who killed James?” Scott said. “Who the driver was that actually did it? Or why?”

Harrington shook his head. “I haven’t spoken to Will. Not since I found out the truth about what he’s doing down here.”

“How did you discover the truth, sir?” I said.

The Admiral paused. Closed his eyes a moment, then said, “It was the night I was shot. Just before pulling the trigger, Will mouthed three words: ‘they killed Junior’.” He steepled his fingers. “And right away I knew the truth.”

I leaned back. Scott gasped and said, “Incredible.”

“Any evidence that James was involved with these guys?” Beck said, asking the tough question.

“None,” Harrington said. “He was stationed up in Jacksonville and passing through after a trip down to Key Largo.”

“Nothing he worked on conflicted with the gang?” Scott said. “They pay attention to that stuff. They recognized me as a former senator from Florida who helped pass bills that negatively affected their operation.”

“There’s no evidence of that,” Harrington said. “None that I’m aware of anyway.”

We stayed long after the sun had set. Sat and talked more and digested everything we’d just heard. The revelations just kept coming. Not only had Will sent all the text messages, he’d also hidden the key in Harrington’s room and carved the storage unit number into the smashed rental car. He’d done all he could to point us to the intel he’d gathered without ever being able to flat out tell us anything, no doubt for fear his messages might be discovered by the Berserkers.

Eventually, Scott leaned forward and said, “So, what now, sir?”

Harrington rubbed his chin. “Now… now we leave.
