Chapter Eleven

Lieutenant Bryce Cannon.

Jace definitely didn’t like the way the man’s name kept coming up in connection with Gideon’s crimes. And since Gideon seemed to have a partner in those crimes, Jace figured it would have made things easier for him if his boss had been in on it.

“How bad do you think Tammy’s hurt?” Linnea asked, and thankfully she hadn’t gone to the window or door to see that for herself. She was still in the hall, and her knuckles had gone white because of the hard grip she had on her gun.

“Hard to tell. There are some bruises on her arms and face, and her dress is torn, but I don’t see any blood.”

However, what Jace did see were tears and plenty of them. The woman had dropped down onto the porch step and was crying with loud, hiccupping sobs. Her gaze fired all around the yard, the nervy gaze of someone ready to jump out of their own skin.

Jace did feel for her and hated to see anyone hurt. Well, anyone hurt who didn’t deserve it. And he wasn’t sure yet if Tammy deserved it or if this was all just a scam. Just like he hadn’t wanted Zimmerman to come in, though, Jace had no intention of letting her in Tammy, either. Crying was going to be her golden ticket to come inside and try to go after Linnea or him.

He continued to stand by the window, and Jace watched as the cruiser pulled into Linnea’s driveway. It hadn’t taken Glenn but just a few minutes, and Jace heard the howl of the ambulance sirens right behind him.

“Stay put,” Jace warned Tammy when she got up to run. “My deputy will take you to the hospital where you’ll be safe.” Where she wouldn’t be able to attack, either, but Jace didn’t spell that out for her.

“He’ll come after me,” Tammy howled. “Lieutenant Cannon will kill me.”

But she didn’t run, not even when Glenn approached. However, Tammy did eye the badge with fear and wariness. Jace had no idea if the emotions were real or not. Since the woman had spent some time behind bars, it was possible that she’d learned how to put on a show, one to convince them that she was a woman in danger.

Jace disarmed the security system so he could crack open the door and speak to Glenn. “This is Tammy Wheatly, a possible material witness along with being Gideon’s CI and lover. Yeah, you heard that right,” Jace added when Glenn raised an eyebrow. “Ride with her to the hospital.”

Which he would be able to do very soon because the ambulance pulled to a stop, and two EMTs rushed out.

“Stay with her at all times,” Jace continued with his instructions to Glenn. “When Tammy’s medically cleared, bring her back to the sheriff’s office. I’ll use the cruiser to get Linnea and me there, and we’ll wait for you. I want to interview Tammy myself.”

Glenn gave him another raised eyebrow. “You think that’s safe to go into your office?”

“Not especially,” Jace muttered.
