Tea Party Challenge to House Republican RINOs

The first challenge to the House Republican establishment came in 2009 from Tea Party activists in upstate New York. Indeed, Pete Sessions and the National Republican Conference Committee (NRCC) hand picked a liberal Republican candidate, Dede R. Scozzafava, after consulting with eleven Republican county chairmen in the 23rd Congressional District of upstate New York. Republican leaders selected her because they believed she would appeal to Liberal Republicans, Independents, and Democrats. They felt that since the district was “moderate-minded,” a liberal candidate was the only candidate who could be elected in that district. The NRCC staff said that Scozzafava was the “most cooperative” candidate of the group put forward by local Republican Party bosses in the 23rd District. “She wasn’t going to be a loose cannon (i.e., someone they could not control) and the money was happy with her.”[33] “Money” referred to high-dollar donors with ties to former New York Governor George Pataki. One staff member explained “ideally, we wanted someone who could self-finance, but we didn’t have anyone like that so we went with someone who would have a natural pool of donors—Scozzafava met that criteria.”[34]
