Base Hospital – Dan’s Room – 1300 Hours

Brody sat in the plastic chair next to Dan’s bed. Dr. Pastore checked him over and read him the riot act for not taking proper care of himself. The doctor proclaimed he must eat to gain back his weight and would allow only short visits to Dan. One hour in Dan’s room followed by at least two hours of rest in his own room beginning tomorrow.

Luckily for him, Major Plouffe ordered the unit to the gun range. For once, Plouffe did something Brody liked. If he hadn’t ordered the guys to go, Brody wouldn’t be visiting Danny until tomorrow. When Blaze entered his room to tell him he needed to report to Plouffe, Dr. Pastore immediately wrote a note exempting Brody based on medical grounds.

Plouffe’s order royally pissed off Blaze. Brody had to restate Blaze’s orders to him about what to do if he couldn’t handle Danny’s nightmares or screaming. Blaze waited with him until a wheelchair arrived to move him to Dan’s room. Brody bitched about riding in the chair, but shut his mouth when Blaze said he would change his mind about him going to Dan.

As he sipped his juice, Brody considered Blaze’s words. Blaze was right about many things. He needed to take care of himself to be here for Dan. It was his fault Dan would think he left him. If he had only realized several days ago, the guys wouldn’t have resorted to sedating him.

He understood their deeds stemmed from a desire to protect him. His brothers undoubtedly saved his life. Brody forgave them all for their actions—actually, there was nothing to forgive. When they got back from whatever Plouffe wanted he would thank each one of them and tell them he harbored no resentment regarding their actions.

As he forced himself to take another small bite of sandwich, Brody reflected on Dan. Blaze was right there too. They all must be strong—him particularly. Danny held on for three months waiting to be rescued. It took tremendous strength of mind and body to withstand what Danny did.

Brody gazed at Danny in the dim room. He asked Kate to close the blinds against the blazing afternoon sun, so Danny had a cooler darkened room to rest in. Only the light near the sink was on. Before the blinds were closed, he noted most of the bruising had healed. Only a few places were still a shade of sickly yellowish brown. Dan’s
