When we’d finally satisfied that itch that needed more than a scratch, we dragged ourselves out of the tub and dried off. His fur dried much faster than I would have assumed. Then, after taking care of some of those fun, basic necessities, drinking a pot of hot tea between the two of us, shuffling our way into his enormous bed, where he proceeded to encourage me to wrap myself around him, bundling me up in the sable pelt he’d gifted me, we both passed the hell out, sleeping like the damned dead.

It wasn’t how I’d planned to spend my birthday, had I sat down and planned it out, but, man, was it the best birthday I’d had to date, absolutely ever.

“Good luck getting rid of me,” I’d told him, right before I’d drifted off. I’d fallen asleep with his name on my lips as he gutturally responded, already drifting off, “Mine.”
