“Let’s go!” I shouted upstairs. “I’m leaving with or without you!”

“Hold your horses!” Chase called out. “I’m coming!”

I glanced at the time and shook my head. He was going to make us late. If he made me have to do extra laps because we were late for the bus, I was going to kick his ass. I grabbed my suitcase and headed for the car. Chase came out a few minutes later.

“Why are you always late?” I asked him. “You know when we’re going to leave. Why don’t you just leave a bag packed?”

“Stop bitching,” he complained. “You sound like my mom.”

When we got to the arena, I wasn’t surprised to find the team already outside waiting to board the bus that would take us to the airport. We got a couple dirty looks from the coach but thankfully nothing was said. Erika was able to secure a seat on the plane again. I was looking forward to the trip with her.

Lucky me, I managed to secure a seat near the back of the plane. I saved her the window seat. It was a little presumptuous. I saw her and very subtly waved to get her attention. She nodded and made her way down the aisle.

“Hi,” I said.

“Hello.”

We settled into our seats without saying anything else. I felt a strange tension between us. We’d been fine after the sex. Maybe this was delayed awkwardness.

It wasn’t until the plane was in the air that she finally turned to me. “How’s your mom?” she asked.

“Good,” I said. “Thanks for asking.”

“So, I feel like I need to clear the air,” she said.

“Clear the air?” I asked.

“All that media stuff,” she said with a wave of her hand.

“Are you worried someone might believe it?” I asked.

“I just want to make sure you don’t believe it,” she said.

“I was there,” I said.

“I know. I just don’t want you to think I’m feeding them that stuff.”

“We already went over this,” I assured her. “It’s forgotten. I’m not worried about it.”

“Good, so, remember what I told you about the benefit?” she asked.

“Kind of. Not really.”

“I secured you and Chase tickets to the event,” she said. “It’s black tie. I brought along a couple of signed pictures for them to auction. I tried to get jerseys, but it was too short notice.”

“Black tie,” I repeated. “As in tux?”

“Yes. I’ve got two rented. I guessed at the size, but I think they’ll be fine.”

I inwardly groaned. “And we’re doing this because I need the press? Still? Haven’t we already established I’m a good guy that actually does know how to smile?”

She laughed and patted my leg. “We know you smile and we’re making strides toward the positive image, but charity would just get us one step further.”

“I hate the idea of mugging for cameras,” I complained.

“Did I mention Lucas White will be there?”

“The Lucas White?” I asked.

“I’m not sure how many there are, but if you’re talking about the hockey great, then that’s the one I’m talking about,” she said.
