33. Invite critique, but require objections to be accompanied by explanations and recommendations.

This crushes the boring habitual objector, the “No Man” who is avoiding the “Yes Man” label. Critique, properly sought and offered, is a balanced review. Objections, by definition, are negative responses to an existing idea or institution or action. To declare an idea as “wrong”, one must identify that which is right. If the proposal is for a frontal attack and the mission is the destruction of the enemy, “I believe a frontal attack is the wrong maneuver”, is an intolerable objection. Objection to the proposed attack may be most appropriate but because the goal is the destruction of the enemy, a substantive justification or alternative must be offered. There is a mission to complete.

Demand a reason or alternative such as, “I believe that a frontal attack is the wrong maneuver. We should attack the left flank because there the enemy is weakest.” Listen fellow executive leaders or aspirants, we can even accept, “attack the left flank and not the front because I had a vision”. Where is your reading comprehension? I didn’t write about sound objections, just if one knows that a proposal or idea is wrong than one must know why.

The leader cannot allow the unsupported objection to go “unassulted!” To do so is to fail to educate, to condone unprepared and unsupported recommendations, and favor the retention of the “No Man.”
