The organisational core

This chapter has considered how reframing supported by processes of neutralisation and normalisation have paved the way for psychological violence to become entrenched as an accepted and acceptable part of the workplace culture and climate. This is not to argue that individuals with aggressive personalities or other dysfunctional characteristics do not heighten the likelihood that individuals will willingly embark on abusive behaviours. It is, rather, to suggest that this would not account for the highly prevalent problem internationally, across sectors and across business types. As argued here, it is more relevant to recognize the ways in which abusive behaviours are normalized across organisations and, therefore, are more difficult to counter. Chapter 7 will begin to take up part of this challenge of prevention and intervention, with the warning that there is no magic bullet here just waiting to be used.
