They strolled for hours, hand-in-hand, afraid to let the other go for fear they would lose each other again.

Charlie spoke of what her life had been like, omitting the most graphic, upsetting details, and finishing with the car crash and her experiences in the afterlife. Lynette listened, occasionally interjecting and then apologizing for doing so.

“I’m used to saying what I want, when I want,” she admitted. “Living on your own for so long erodes your social skills, I think. And mine weren’t great to begin with.”

“I don’t mind,” said Charlie, as she gazed in awe at an unfinished church Lynette had referred to as La Sagrada Familia. “It’s nice to hear your voice again. The way it’s meant to sound.” She thought for a moment. “I’m glad she stopped trying to get the intonations right. After a while, she just sounded like Susan, only higher pitched. So when she shouted at me, or said horrible things, it didn’t sound like you were saying it.”

“It must have been awful.”

Charlie didn’t know what to say to that. It had been awful. An unending nightmare of violence and sexual torture. She had long thought she would never enjoy sex — or any form of intimacy — again. But in Lynette’s arms, she felt safe. Safe, and loved. What else mattered?

“How about you?” Charlie asked, changing the subject. “What have you been up to since you died?”

“There’s a sentence you don’t hear every day,” smiled Lynette. The smile faded. “It took a while for things to be okay. I was trapped, locked in my worst memories. Forced to relive them, over and over.”

Charlie nodded. Susan had shown her some of them, though she didn’t mention that. If Lynette wanted to talk about those, then she would, in her own time.

“Eventually, I learned how to change things. How to control the memories. See, you can change them, with enough effort. You just gotta learn how.”

“How long did it take you?”

Words deserted Lynette. Her lip quivered, a teardrop rolling down her cheek. “A long time,” she said quietly, and turned away.

“I’m sorry,” said Charlie.

“It’s okay. It’s over now.”

A sudden tremor rattled the windows in the surrounding buildings. Charlie stumbled as a sizeable chunk of rubble crashed to the ground nearby.

“Quakes are getting worse,” said Lynette grimly.

“When did they start?” Charlie asked, although she knew the answer before Lynette said it.

“Around the time you arrived.”

Charlie looked at the broken masonry. It was bright blue, which was odd, as it didn’t match any of the buildings. She left Lynette, curiously drawn to the rock. It was several feet wide, and as blue as the—

“Oh,” she said, as she kneeled by the unusual rock. She reached towards it, into it, feeling the cold air blast her hand.

“What’s wrong?” asked Lynette.

Charlie didn’t answer. Instead, she gazed up at the sinister black hole high above them, from where the chunk of sky had fallen.

“Well, that’s probably not good,” she said.
