Peaches in a tub or large pot need little pruning other than remedially removing diebacked stems

Hard pruned in winter, these trained apples are also summer pruned ruthlessly with shears

In most cases the leading tip is only lightly winter-pruned, if at all, while all side shoots are pruned or sheared back at least twice in summer and further tidied with winter pruning. Eventually, the spurs may need thinning on older cordons, though. Because cordons necessarily have weak rootstocks, they always need supports and are best trained against a wall, fence, or in a straight row, preferably aligned north–south to get equal amounts of sun on either face.
