Chapter Seven
Charlie leaned back in the chair, watching the guys carry the water barrels back and forth from the stream as they watered the garden. She hated it was so hard on them, but it had to be done. She sighed then instantly was on her guard with her spear in her hand when two men appeared around the corner of the porch.
“Gordon! Denver!” she yelled as she held the spear at the ready.
Both men turned and hurried over with their own spears until they saw the men walking toward the porch.
“Hank, Forest. What are you doing scaring our woman like that?” Denver asked.
“Your woman? When did you go and get a woman?” Hank asked.
“Charlie, meet Hank and Forest. We’ve told you about them and that they’d be here sometime soon,” Gordon said.
“Nice to meet you,” she said without putting her spear down.
The two men nodded at her.
“How about we help you finish up your watering and then we can do some trading,” Forest suggested.
“Sounds good,” Denver said. “We’ve got an extra barrel in the shed.”
Charlie watched as the two strangers walked off with Gordon and Denver toward the shed. She noticed that both men were also well muscled and tanned like her men. They worked hard so they weren’t lazy either. They’d been nice and hadn’t made crude jokes. At least not so far.
She waited until they were nearly finished with watering then she went inside and poured up four glasses of iced tea so that when they came in, they were ready. Hank and Forest thanked her and sat down at the kitchen table with Denver and Gordon. Denver had brought in a chair from the other room for her to sit between them.
“We’ve got two bags of flour. Was hoping to trade for some canned tomatoes and some potatoes,” Hank said.
“Flour would be good,” Denver said. “We’ll trade two jars of tomatoes and a pound of potatoes.”
“Four jars of tomatoes and two pounds of potatoes,” Forest said.
They went back and forth until they struck a deal. Denver went down into the cellar and brought back up the goods and they exchanged right there. Hank wrapped the three jars of tomatoes up in old clothes so they wouldn’t break and settled them into a backpack while Forest settled the potatoes into his pack.
They settled into talk for the next little while. Charlie learned a little more about them. They lived about five miles to the west of them and also had solar power. They’d had a bad year with their garden the year before due to Hank getting bitten by a snake and not able to work in the garden for nearly a month. That had left Forest alone to work it and a lot of it had gone to the weeds. This year they were in a lot better shape.
While the men continued to talk, she got up and gathered a few of her griddle cakes for them to take back with them and tied them up in a cloth.
