DFM & DFA

While DFM/DFA are (in my opinion) neglected subjects in product development, some great resources are available.

The most-cited reference in this area is Product Design for Manufacture and Assembly by Boothroyd and Dewhurst, and Knight. Boothroyd and Dewhurst are considered pioneers in the creating methodical processes for DFM and DFA. Their eponymously-named company has some useful information on its web site and offers excellent (but not inexpensive!) DFM/DFA software that has proven very useful. This software can accurately estimate product manufacturing and assembly costs given design and process information, which allows us to play with different designs and processes to see how they’ll effect cost.

Dragon Innovation has a series of free online DFM course videos, adopted from a course taught at Olin College of Engineering by Dragon CEO Scott Miller. It’s very real-world oriented, I’d consider it mandatory viewing even if it weren’t free.
