Chapter 25

Natalie

With Luca being on bed rest, the next week is mainly uneventful, but I don’t see that as a bad thing at all. In fact, it’s been peaceful, and I think we all need some calmness after the chaos and excitement of last Saturday.

I’ve been a bit of a helicopter mom this week, constantly checking in on Allie and monitoring her closely to make sure that she’s taking things well. For six years, she’s been without a dad. Now, he’s in her life!

It’s a big change, and I just want to make sure that she’s handling the news well. If I’m honest, I don’t even know what’s all going to change from here on out. There aren’t any plans for the three of us to share a house yet, especially since what me and Luca have is so fresh and new.

All I know is that I don’t want to rush anything. I think doing things as a family is a good place to start, and we can go from there. For now, the main focus is making sure that Allie is okay and helping Luca heal so that he can get back to work on the case.

Given the craziness of my life lately, I decided to take a few days off from work so that I can try to get my life together more and check in on Luca as he heals at home. After dropping off Allie at school, where she has proudly announced on multiple occasions how cool her dad is, I walk over to Luca’s house and knock on the door.

A few seconds later, the door unlocks and swings open. Luca leans against the doorframe in a pair of black joggers and a black t-shirt, his hair slightly messy from lying down.

“I need to get you a key,” he says.

I laugh a little as I step into his house.

“So that I don’t keep disturbing you?” I reply as I follow him back to his bedroom, where he’s all set up for healing and relaxation.

He has water, snacks, pain medicine, and a phone charger on his nightstand next to his bed, and his television has some sort of crime show playing. All he has to do is lay down and be still, but he can barely do that because he’s so antsy.

“So you can come in whenever,” Luca tells me. “And if Allie wants to come over. She can always do homework here or play out in the backyard. I kept that cornhole game set up out there.”

His words make my heart flutter, and I pass him a grateful smile.

“She seems really happy this week. She wants to come see you when you’re feeling better,” I reply.

“I’m feeling better,” Luca assures me. “I want to run something by her, but I want to talk to you about it first.”

I nod, gesturing for him to continue.

“My family invited you guys to join us for Thanksgiving,” Luca says with a hopeful gleam in his dark eyes. “There’s a lot of good food, and my family is really excited about meeting both of you.
