CHAPTER SIX

Adam

I enjoyed protecting Evie in her apartment more than I cared to admit. Of course, I shouldn't have fucking called her sweetheart. Two days later and I was still kicking myself over that slip. What was wrong with me? I was her protector and nothing more. Besides, a strong, independent woman like her wouldn't want a Daddy. She needed protection now, and was willing to accept comfort from me, but that was it. She wouldn't want me after this was all over.

I was in the kitchen, making some dinner. Since watching her at home, it had become clear that Evie wasn't taking care of herself the way she was supposed to. She even tried to have only a bowl of ice cream for dinner one night! Not anymore. I could make dinner and keep an eye on the doors and windows at the same time. I might not be her Daddy, but I'd take care of her as long as she let me.

Evie was in the living room, Facetiming with her brother, as I cooked a stir fry.

"I thought you would be home by now," she said.

"I'm going to stay in Maine for a little longer," he said.

"What? Avoiding me?"

He laughed. "No. It's just ... Maine is nice."

"What aren't you telling me?"

A hot drop of oil splattered and burned my forearm. I cursed.

"What was that?" the brother said.

“Nothing,” Evie said. “What?”

"Do you... do you have a man over? What aren't you telling me?"

"Nothing."

"Come on. Let me meet him. I have to know who I need to beat up when I get back there."

"It's not like that."

"Then why can't I meet him?"

"Because I'm not ready for you to meet my boyfriend!"

Boyfriend? The spatula slipped out of my hand. I turned to look at Evie, but her back was facing me, so I couldn't see her expression. I turned off the stove.

"Hello, Evie's boyfriend!" the brother called out.

Shit. I didn't know what Evie was playing at, but I didn't want to make it weird for her. I could play along for a couple of minutes, even if the charade made my stomach turn. I turned and approached the phone, doing my best to smile, as I leaned over her shoulder.

"Hey," I said.

Her brother grinned back at me, but his eyes were appraising me, as if he was trying to decide if I was worthy of his little sister. I could have saved him the trouble and told him the truth: I wasn't worthy.

"Nice to meet you,” he said. “How did you two meet?"

I glanced at Evie, who had a frozen smile on her face and a slight blush rising in her cheeks.

"She makes good coffee," I said. "At the Daily Grind. Started coming in regularly before work."

"Where do you work?"

"I'm the sheriff."

"The… Jesus, Evie, you're dating the sheriff? What are you going to do when you two get in a fight? Who are you going to turn to?"

I fought to keep my expression neutral. This wasn't the first time I’d been grilled by a well-meaning relative, but usually they weren't so blatant about their suspicions.
