The taxi ride home seemed like the longest Nic had ever endured.

Torsten walked him to the door and went through the usual drill of checking the apartment. He did it in the dark, moving through the rooms swiftly and in silence, his figure caught by the passing glances of streetlights. Finally satisfied, he drew down the blinds in the living room.

Nic switched on the overhead light. The sudden stark illumination hurt his eyes. He bent to take off his shoes, weariness swimming through his head. He straightened, running a hand through his hair, and caught sight of his reflection in the hall mirror. Beneath the unflattering fluorescence he looked pale and washed-out. Dark circles under his eyes marked where his kohl had smudged. His hair had flopped into a sweaty tangle. He’d seen himself like this many times before, but tonight it seemed different. He shied away from thinking about why.

Torsten finished with the blinds and came toward him, boots percussive over the linoleum floor. His hands were bunched in his jacket pockets. He looked as fresh as when they’d left the building at the start of the evening, but now there was no easy smile, just a blankness.

For the first time, Nic realised he didn’t know this man at all.

“Was it worth it?”

The question dropped like a bomb. Hiding the splintering of guilt behind ignorance, Nic lifted his chin. “What?”

“That guy. Sneaking out into the alley. Did it make you feel good?”

Nic shrugged. “Yeah. Actually.”

“I think you’re lying.”

“I don’t give a toss what you think.”

Torsten smiled. Not a happy smile, but one cold and threaded through with the glittering of danger. “Now you’re definitely lying.”

Arousal hit Nic so hard it robbed him of breath. He trembled as Torsten hemmed him in, crowding him against the wall. A glimpse of his reflection in the mirror showed him wide-eyed, his mouth soft with desire and hectic colour striping his cheeks. He couldn’t look at himself, couldn’t face what Torsten did to him. Yanking his gaze away, he looked up at his bodyguard and waited for the punishing kiss he knew he deserved.

Torsten came closer.

Nic shut his eyes. Torsten’s breath fanned against his mouth. So close now he could feel the heat of Torsten’s skin. He kept himself motionless, waiting.

Torsten held still, millimetres away. “Don’t lie to me,” he said, softly, so softly. Then he pulled back, threw Nic a fierce, unreadable look, and walked out of the apartment.
