3:03 P.M.

“How are you feeling?” Max asked Raven as he walked into the living room. He knew how lucky they’d been to get to her in time. Just a couple of minutes longer and not only would Joseph Calder have killed her, but he would also have violated her. It would have been a horrific way to die, and he wasn’t sure he’d ever get the images out of his mind of entering the kitchen to find Raven’s skirt bunched around her hips and a hand around her throat, squeezing the life out of her.

“Better,” she said and offered him a tired smile. Arrow had checked her out and given her some oxygen and painkillers, and she seemed to be holding it together, but she’d been through a lot in a short space of time, and she still had a lot more to go through, he was worried about her.

“You sure?” There were dark circles under her eyes, the bruise on her forehead was turning an awful shade of greeny-yellow, and red marks were forming on her neck from Joseph Calder’s hands. He knew they would be dark black and blue bruises within a few hours.

“I'm tired, I'm hurting, but so far everything is going the way we’d hoped. We got our access to that auction, and that’s all that’s important.”

“It's not all that’s important,” he corrected as he pulled up a chair and sat beside her. “You are important too. How you’re handling this is important. Bringing down Le Entregar is important, but it's not the only thing that is. I know how much you want to do this, and because it means a lot to you, it means a lot to me too, but I don’t want to lose you in the process.”

“You won't lose me.” Raven held out her hand and he took it and squeezed. Although he liked her confidence, there was no way to know for sure what was going to happen. She’d weighed the pros and cons and made her decision, but he hadn't had a chance to do that because Raven had already decided, she was going ahead with her plan with support or without it. That meant he had no choice but to offer his support.

“You can't know that,” he said softly. His thumb brushed lightly across her knuckles. Her hands were so much smaller than his, she was so much smaller than him, just like she’d been much smaller than Joseph Calder. His instincts told him to protect her, tuck her away someplace where nothing could ever hurt her, and treat her like she was fragile. But she wasn’t fragile. She was tough, stronger than he was. While he’d run from the pain of losing their child, she had faced it head-on and made it her mission to right that wrong.

Now she was prepared and willing to walk into a dangerous place. A place filled with men who thought nothing of buying and selling their fellow human beings. She was putting herself into a situation where she would have no rights.
