A sound jolted Mason awake but was gone as soon as he opened his eyes. He blinked, confused, looking towards the swaying curtains at the open window. Had he dreamed it? But then it came again, a light tap on the door, and his heart surged so dramatically that he thought he would be sick. He stumbled to his feet, caught sight of his suddenly milk-white face in the mirror and went to the door. He put a hand on the handle, taking a couple of slow, deep breaths before he opened it.

There was nobody outside. Mason stuck his head out with his heart racing and saw a short, dark-haired man walking away with slumped shoulders and a bowed head.

“Kayden?” he said, in a voice little more than a croak.

The figure stopped, turned around slowly. Kayden looked different. He was well-dressed in black pants and a smart, blue dress shirt. His hair was shorter, almost severely cropped, emphasising his dark eyes. He looked as beautiful as ever.

His plump mouth parted as he looked at Mason. He shook his head as though in disbelief, then he started to run. He threw himself into Mason’s arms.
