Chapter Thirteen

Moments later, Cotter stood beneath the stinging spray in his own bathroom. His throat worked convulsively.

He scrubbed himself hard as he walled himself off from the emotions trying to get his attention. He couldn’t allow himself to feel, not now.

He had a job to do and he couldn’t do it if he was wallowing in emotion like a fucking woman. His mother had done that and it had led her to motel rooms, while he sat at home wishing she was there with him. She’d hated his father’s job and when she got angry and lonely, she went out and picked up men.

How did he know?

She could never get the stink of them, of her guilt, off her before she came home. After all, there was no guilt, only triumph that she’d showed that husband of hers how she much she cared that he was hauling another load someplace.

She’d despised being a trucker’s wife and she’d grown to despise being a mother to Cotter too. He was just a reminder of his father, whom she had walked out on one hot summer day.

His father had stuck around a little longer, but the man had hated the sight of his queer son. He’d tried to beat the gay out of him at first, then just shrugged his shoulders and said fuck it.

Cotter shut off the water, feeling nothing. He didn’t need his feelings. They often just got him burned bad.

He climbed out and grabbed the towel he’d brought in with him to briskly rub himself dry. As he did so, his mind betrayed him. The smell of cedar drifted through him. He could smell it in the very minutest detail. It was delicate on Bronte’s inner thighs and cock but had a depth to it that he couldn’t forget.

“What is it?” Cotter demanded as he moved in closer. That faint scent of cedar teased his nostrils.

Bronte didn’t take his gaze from the dresser. “I grabbed some stuff from my spare bedroom without looking through it because it’s— I didn’t think I needed to. I haven’t been in the spare room in a few days. I didn’t know.”

“Didn’t know what?” Cotter demanded in irritation.

“Look!” Bronte snapped, pointing to the dresser. He swallowed tightly.

There was a small box on the dresser next to a typed note.
