* * *

The elevator dinged and Leona slowly got off, entering the pediatric floor. It’d been a long night, and she still had two hours to go. How was she going to make it? She had tried so hard to save her last patient but...She felt a tear escape from her eye and closed her eyes.

Be strong, Leona. You still have a job to do. She wiped away the tear and opened her eyes. If she kept telling herself that, maybe she would eventually believe it.

As she rounded the corner, she spotted Bella. Bella rushed up to her, and Leona wanted Bella to just hold her, but they were in the middle of the ward, and that would have raised too many questions. Instead, she simply nodded.

“I was wondering if you would ever come back up here,” Bella said, her voice lighthearted and airy.

“What are you still doing here?” Leona asked, barely making eye contact. “I thought you were off at three.”

“I was, but Dr. Whalen needed help with a breathing treatment on a patient, Joey. He couldn’t get to sleep and started having an asthma attack. It was sort of last minute. I didn’t mind staying, though. I’ll get home in plenty of time to get three hours of sleep before I head to school.”

Leona gave a weak smile, knowing this was a sore subject for Bella. “Remember, just don’t push yourself too hard.”

“I won’t,” Bella replied. “How was your trauma patient?”

Leona looked to Bella, and she couldn’t stop the tears from falling. Bella’s eyes grew wide, and she grabbed Leona’s hand and pulled her toward the room they had embraced in. The place they had passionately made out in was now a place Leona would crumble in front of Bella.

“What happened?” Bella asked.

When Leona looked up and met Bella’s concerned stare, Bella pulled her into her arms and hugged her. There was a warmth in that hug that left Leona feeling safe and secure, despite the heartache that was crushing her chest.

“I lost her,” she said. “Only two years old and I couldn’t save her. Maybe I’m not the doctor I thought I was.”

Bella pulled back from the embrace and met Leona’s eyes. She shook her head. “I’m sure you did everything you could to save that little girl. What happened is not your fault.”

“But—” Leona started to argue.

Bella brushed her hand against Leona’s cheek and Leona closed her eyes, moving into that very touch. Why was she feeling all these things that were wrong in so many ways? She knew Bella wasn’t available and she should have backed off from her deep desires. Instead, she clung to them like they brought her life. It was wrong, and now she was paying the price for that. She was destined to have another heart broken—hers.

“You were not the problem, Leona. I wasn’t there, but I know that in my heart.”

Leona swallowed the lump in her throat and nodded. It was harder to believe than that, though. She was the one sent there to assist in taking care of the little girl.
